The bottom of the inside this piece is black and the sides are red. The underside of the stem is also black surrounded by red. The outside is a textured green applied with sponges. I chose red to symbolize blood and suffering, black for death being composted into green for new life. I was exploring the idea that visible life sprang from the less visible suffering and death. Henri Nowen's book, Can You Drink the Cup? may have inspired my choice of form. So, too, might my I Accept cup from several months earlier.
