Percussion

Colored pencils, March 2001

This is a celebration of my love for playing percussion.  I wanted to represent the vibrations, the physicality of percussion.
When I was in 6th grade, the teacher asked me to play bass clarinet because there were an abundance of percussionists.  I agreed and played the bass and contra-bass clarinet for 8 years despite the fact that I never felt passionate about the clarinet.  I did get to play percussion again in high school during jazz band and marching band and I really loved it.
In this piece when the teacher asks me to choose the convenient bass clarinet and I reply, "I am going to play percussion.  And the toys!"
How many times my real likes and desires seem inconvenient and yet there is where my passion lies.
