In my 20's and early 30's I panicked whenever I saw a spider. I finally got the connection when Anjali brought home an art project in which her two hands were overlapped, traced, and cut out to be a spider. My grampa's hands were long and thin, almost delicate, like a piano player or a surgeon- spider hands. I tried to trace my own hands and elongate them but this simply captured the idea but not the shape. I have one relative whose hands remind me of grampa's but I didn't ask to trace them. I can still see his hands in my mind's eye- overlapped, long and spidery, reaching for me to silence me.
