Powderhorn Park class, summer 2009
These pieces were wonderfully fun to make. All the other new students were taking lessons from the teacher on the demands of the wheel. And I walked over to the extruder and started making long snakes of clay by pulling hard on this long lever and then cutting the pieces, scoring them, and forming them together.
The piece on the right is based on a conversation from a cranio-sacral bodywork class I took. The instructor told me that when she touched me, she thought of a humpback whale which in Native American tradition is The Mother, the deeply compassionate one, who swims to the depths. I was intrigued and read articles about whales, checked out CD's of whale songs, and ultimately made this piece which looks like a whale's underbelly.
